Gemsquash Designs is a Cape Town based company specialising in babies’ and children’s handcrafted linen. The unique appliqué designs are created using highly sought after natural bamboo products which are hand-woven and crafted by women from previously disadvantaged communities of South Africa. By designing and teaching the technique used, Gemsquash has harnessed and then enhanced the basic skills of a group of caring women from these communities.
The company was started by Simone de Saint Clair in 2001 after the birth of her first baby, Gemma. Simone was joined by Cheryl Battersby in 2006 and together they have grown the company from strength to strength, constantly creating new designs and ideas to enhance their beautiful range of baby linen.
Gemsquash linens are made from high quality percales, pure cottons and soft chambrays. All components used in the range are sourced with the health and safety of babies and children in mind.
The natural bamboo used in the Gemsquash range is

- 60% more absorbent than cotton
Bamboo regenerates naturally through an extensive root system which re-creates an average of four to six new shoots per year which means it can be harvested again and again and again thus making it an extremely eco-friendly product.
No pesticides are required on bamboo crops and the crops are never sprayed.
The bamboo is durable and is easily washed and ironed without losing any of it’s colour or special qualities.
